Music of the Baroque

Nov. 5 - 7, 2009

Workshops

Introduction to the Baroque - Thurs. 7:30 pm

This is an introduction to the Baroque period, its art and music, and especially its dance, and how the dance forms relate to the music. Catherine Lee and her troupe of dancers of the Vancouver Historical Dance Performance Society will bring us the people and what they did with the music we play now for concerts.

Introduction to Baroque Instrumental Music - Fri. 9:30 - 11:45 am

Paul Luchkow and Michael Jarvis will lead us into the mysteries and magic of the Baroque by playing and speaking about the time and how we can interpret it today. They will play some of the music, and take us on tour into the past, and into Europe

Three afternoon Instrumental Workshops - Fri. 1:15 - 3:30 pm

There will be 3 separate workshops, running concurrently. Though these are mainly hands-on workshops, you may also register and audit only.

Please choose:

Baroque Keyboards

This is a chance to learn about the various keyboards of the period, and all registrants will have a chance to play on one. Bring a bit of your favourite baroque piece to play. Michael Jarvis is a widely respected harpsichordist and will lead discuss ideas about playing harpsichord music on the piano, and how to do it convincingly.

Recorders

Baroque recorders varied in size from the teeniest sopranino to the great bass - taller than an average player - and played all sorts of music.  Bring your own recorder, or borrow one at the class. (email marilyn@harpcanada.com to reserve) We're hoping for a mix of novice and more advanced players and there will be music for all levels for all the tunes.

Strings

The golden age of the violin, and the time when gambas and cellos were competing for their place in the orchestra. Bows were changing, playing styles were changing and composers challenged musicians with new forms and virtuosity. Bring your violin, viola and cellos, or your viola da gamba and play music in the baroque style.

The Grand Concert - Fri. 7 pm

Led by Paul Luchkow, one of Canada's leading baroque violinists, the concert will feature many of the clinicians and glorious music. All ages are welcome, and there may be tickets at the door if you have additional guests who want to come. Check back here to see, closer to the date.

Choral Music of the Baroque - Sat. 9:30-11:45 am

This is the morning for adult and youth choir members. Put what you've learned about Baroque music into practice, and sing some beautiful music under the direction of Marvin Regier.

The Baroque Orchestra - Sat. 1:15 - 3:30 pm

For all string players, recorders and other woodwinds, and brass. Paul Luchkow will lead us through some fine Baroque compositions. This is a fabulous opportunity if you've never played in an orchestra, and exciting training for those who do so regularly. Space is limited - register early.

Harpsichord Masterclass - Sat. 1:15 - 3:30 pm

Selected students (see your teacher!) will play for a masterclass lesson with Michael Jarvis, and his comments and assistance will be valuable for all students of the piano, so auditors are most welcome.

The Baroque Feast! - Sat. 6 pm

A potluck feast; bring what you wish to share. Then we'll share music as well, provided by instructors and students. We're planning this as a fine and celebratory end to our trip into the past.
